SecondSkin Aftercare

Traditional Tattoo Aftercare

Traditional Tattoo Aftercare

SecondSkin is a medical-grade, transparent, adhesive barrier that protects new tattoos while they're healing.

It is latex-free, waterproof, breathable, and hypoallergenic.

Removing the SecondSkin

  1. Once the SecondSkin has been applied, it's recommended keeping it on the fresh tattoo for a minimum of 3 to 5 days.
  2. Once it's ready to be removed, wash your hands and pull the SecondSkin across the skin slowly, while under lukewarm water in the shower.  Do not pull it straight up & away from the skin. Dispose of the bandage appropriately.
  3. Once it's removed, lather a fragrance-free soap in your hands and gently rub your fresh tattoo and surrounding skin. Do not use a loofa or cloth.
  4. Gently rinse your tattoo with lukewarm water. Ensure the tattoo is completely free of soap before exiting the shower.
  5. Pat your new tattoo & surrounding area dry with a paper towel.
  6. Apply a light amount of fragrance-free lotion twice a day until all skin flakes are removed.

Once your tattoo becomes dry and flakey, it will also become itchy. Do not scratch the tattoo.

Instead, lightly slap the skin; never scratch or rub the tattoo against anything to satisfy the itch.

Traditional tattoo aftercare is recommended when SecondSkin bandages cannot be used, and instead, plastic wrap and SensiWrap are used.

Occasionally, a soaker-pad is used to help collect fluid (blood, plasma, etc).

Removing the Bandage/Plastic Wrap

If you do not have pets, I recommend removing the bandage before bed on the day of your tattoo; if you do have pets, leave the bandage on until the morning after.

  1. Wash your hands, then slowly remove the bandage and dispose of it appropriately.
  2. Wash your hands once more, then lather a fragrance-free soap in your hands and gently rub your fresh tattoo and surrounding skin. Do not use a loofa or cloth.
  3. Gently rinse your tattoo with lukewarm water. Ensure the tattoo is completely free of soap.
  4. Pat your new tattoo & surrounding area dry with a paper towel.
  5. Continue to wash your new tattoo every 12 hours.

Important Info

  • I recommend not working out/going to the gym for at least 7 days immediately following your tattoo appointment. Sweat will irritate the tattoo and your SecondSkin bandage (if applicable) may fall off early and compromise your tattoo's healing process.
  • Do not pick or scratch at your fresh tattoo. Removing the scabs/skin flakes before they naturally detach will remove ink and your tattoo will heal "splotchy". Scratching also affects the tattoo in this way.
  • While we all love our pets, they contain a lot of germs. Please keep your pets away from your fresh tattoo until the tattoo is appropriately healed (2 weeks).
  • Do not swim or submerge your fresh tattoo in water for at least 2 weeks immediately following your tattoo appointment. This includes: pools, hot tubs, and bath tubs.
  • Avoid direct sunlight on your fresh tattoo for at least 4 weeks immediately following your tattoo appointment.
  • Once your tattoo is fully healed (4 weeks), apply a minimum of 30 SPF sunscreen as directed, if you will be showing off your tattoo in the sunlight.
  • It is OK to ice your fresh tattoo immediately following your tattoo appointment, as long as the ice is within a bag that's wrapped in either paper towel, or a freshly washed cloth towel. Do not apply ice directly to the skin.
